InCommon @ The Advocacy Academy
Our podcast workshop with The Advocacy Academy and InCommon reflected on How to Make Change — a 10-month pilot programme that brought together young people, community organisers, and their older neighbours in Brixton to share skills, experiences, and visions for the future.
Hosted at the Liberation Centre in Brixton, the episode captured participants’ reflections on intergenerational learning, community organising, and the importance of creating “third spaces” — places where people of all ages could connect, listen, and act together.
Contributors from across generations shared honest and moving insights about the joys and challenges of building community across difference — from moments of solidarity over shared meals to learning how to navigate conflict and accountability with care. They spoke about the power of intergenerational dialogue to build empathy, confidence, and collaboration, and about their shared hope of creating more inclusive, connected futures.

Feedback from Participants:
“The podcast captured the energy of the room – you could feel how uplifted, connected and vital everyone felt just from hearing those voices.” — Workshop participant
“I think this podcast is exactly what intergenerational change-making sounds like – real people, real community, and everyone learning from each other.” - Workshop Participant
Feedback from Staff:
“Amplify Us created such an amazing space for us to tell our stories in the way we wanted them told. None of us had made a podcast before, and we really warmed into it – it was a beautiful process.
This whole process has shown that we need each other to make change. Intergenerational spaces like this are exactly what the world needs.” — Betty, Lead Community Organiser, The Advocacy Academy ”
Become Charity
Our podcast workshop with the Become Charity explored the real experiences of young people leaving the care system and highlighted what needed to change to support them better. Hosts Humerah and Roselyn were joined by fellow campaigners Georgia, G, Kane, and Charlotte, who shared powerful stories of navigating housing insecurity, pursuing education, and confronting systemic barriers, all while advocating for a more supportive transition out of care. The episode also featured insights from Jo Petty, Campaigns and Participation Manager at Become, who explained the goals of the End The Care Cliff campaign. The campaign called for a fully funded opt-out system for Staying Put and Staying Close up to age 25, legal changes to homelessness legislation to exempt care leavers from local area connection rules and intentionality assessments, and guaranteed access to rent deposit schemes and guarantors from local authorities.

Feedback from Participants:
"I had a really great time learning more about my peers, my fellow campaigners. I feel like it's been a cool space to share and think about what we've been doing at Become, why we've been doing it, and what we want to do next." Gee, Workshop participant
"I really enjoyed taking part in the podcast — it was something completely new for me, and I don’t think I would have ever done anything like it outside of Become. It’s been such a cool experience, learning new skills and getting to speak naturally rather than sticking to a script. I’ve genuinely loved the whole process." Amira, Workshop Participant
"I feel like with a lot of media interviews, you end up talking about what they want you to talk about. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but this felt different — we could just have a real conversation about what we wanted to talk about, and discuss the issues that matter to us in a way that feels true to us. I’ve never done podcasting before, and it’s been really fun!" Georigia, Workshop Participant
The Verbatim Formula
In this workshop hosted in Brixton, Kismet, Vee, and Li — three care-experienced young women involved with The Verbatim Formula, a powerful project founded by Maggie Inchley and Sylvan Baker — came together to explore how creativity, storytelling, and community can shape new ways of thinking about experiences of care. The conversation delved into personal stories of empowerment, the importance of safe spaces, and the role of the arts in challenging societal perceptions. Through poetry, performance, and advocacy, the guests shared how creative expression offered a space for connection, healing, and meaningful change.

Feedback from Participants:
"It was my first time recording a podcast, and I instantly felt welcomed and at ease. The space felt safe and comfortable, which made it so much easier to open up and have a genuine conversation. The cosy atmosphere really added to the experience.". - Kismet, Workshop participant
"The facilitator was so pleasant and clear, making everything easy to understand. Their calm guidance and clear instructions helped the session run smoothly and made the whole process feel natural and enjoyable.". - Vee, Workshop Participant
The Advocacy Academy
The Young Seeds podcast was developed at The Advocacy Academy in Brixton by four passionate young women. Over the course of four weeks, they created a compelling 45-minute episode exploring the theme of gentrification and its impact on their local communities. Through interviews with local business owners and youth workers, street-level vox pops, and insightful chat segments, they highlighted the importance of youth voices in conversations about change and community.

Feedback from Participants:
"I love spaces where youth can authentically be youth. We can have our voices heard, with a bit of guidance... liberatory guidance. That's what I call it. That's what I liked about this workshop. - Filija, Workshop participant
One of the things I appreciated most about this podcast is how, through gentle and thoughtful teaching, it helped me develop essential skills I had been needing—skills that are now enabling me to move other projects forward.. - Natalia, Workshop Participant
Feedback from Staff:
"Amplify Us worked closely with our young people to produce an engaging podcast while developing their storytelling skills. They created a fun, supportive environment that took participants on a meaningful learning journey—helping them not only acquire new skills but also discover more about their own potential. The workshop was delivered at our location by a safe pair of hands and we were all extremely impressed with the final result"
- Associate Director of Communications, The Advocacy Academy
Chestnut Grove Academy
The Young Reel Podcast is the result of our first five week workshop with film and media students in years 11 and 12 at Chestnut Grove Academy. They decided to focus their podcast on the decline of cinema amongst younger audiences

Feedback from Participants:
"I liked collaborating in a group and having discussions with other young people that I wouldn’t have had outside of the workshop setting, I had an awesome time!" - Year 11 Student
I enjoyed the journey of making a podcast and observing and learning the way everything was pieced together. - Year 11 Student
Feedback from Staff:
"Our participants were all keen media and film students who can take the valuable production skills they gained in this workshop and apply them to their GCSE and A-Level coursework as well as their future careers in media related industries. They gained confidence and discovered a new and exciting way to express themselves." - Film & Media Teacher
